No days off!

For all those who think teachers get the weekends off, you're wrong. This is my homework from admin. No, it's not grading or planning lessons. It's all data paperwork.

I'm back...

It's been a while since I posted. I don't feel like I ever have time. My students this year are wonderful. I enjoy them very much. However, we have even more busy work outside of my teaching in the classroom. There's mounds of data and paperwork to complete. Usually I would come home in the evenings and do homework with my kids, then plan lessons and grade papers. Now I have all of this extra data paperwork to do. I don't have time for anything. We probably get two conference periods a week that aren't full of meetings. So that's not an option. My work load outside of the classroom has definitely doubled. I don't mind planning lessons or grading on my own time. But doing data paperwork rather than playing with my kids or spending time with my family, that bothers me. So there's my whine for the week. I'm sure it's been missed. Hehe!

Schools out for summer!

Summer is upon us! I am making it a point to stay in bed until at least 7am. However, 8am is ideal. I'm averaging 3 loads of laundry and 2 loads of dishes per day. I sweep multiple times each day and insist my kids clean the living room at least once a day, sometimes twice. This may sound boring to some. But when you work outside the home, these are the things you are too tired to do. I feel so much more productive when my house is taken care of and I'm not too tired to add in fun activities with my kids. We are only a few days into the summer and I absolutely love it. Some told me I would miss my classroom. I'll let you know if that happens. I'm seriously doubting it though.

Being A Teacher

Who was it that said teaching was the easiest job ever? Who was it that said anyone can be a teacher?
That's complete ignorance talking. Teachers work every day. There's plenty of state requirements to keep you busy during every minute outside of school. Not to mention the required meetings and trainings that confine your one hour conference period. Then you have your grading and editing of papers.
In the mist of STAAR, I've come to another realization. I don't mind the STAAR for data collection purposes. It's nice to find out where students are lacking and where we need to focus our attention. But STAAR should not punish kids and keep them from moving up. Just as STAAR shouldn't be used to evaluate teachers.
All that being said, I'm exhausted, just as most of the working class in our society are. I love teaching. Otherwise, I wouldn't put myself through this. Why do people feel like they can vent about their jobs, but when a teacher does it, they're horrible? I love my students, I call them my kids. I think about their well being and worry for them as I do my own children. I pray for their success. I hope that's the part people remember.

Work, work, work

I put off grading the entire spring break. Here it is, the day before we return to school, and I'm just now grading papers. I didn't even take my bag out of the car until today. It was nice being off all spring break. But I wish I hadn't put work off until the last minute.

I love roses in the morning.
